Children are grouped into sets for spelling in years 3-6 depending on ability. Children are taught in these sets for one 40 minute session a week and are given spelling homework weekly to complete in years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Spelling work often takes the form of investigations and encourages children to take an interest in and be excited by words. Testing will be carried out when appropriate, usually at the end of a unit. Most sets in a year group focus on the same sound/rule but work is differentiated according to the group. Word level work within the literacy session also focuses on this sound/rule.
